Originally built at Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan facility as a rare X-code Mustang Fastback, this 1968 model currently available for sale on PCARMARKET has undergone an extensive restoration and modification, reimagining it as a tribute to the original Shelby GT500.
The restoration reportedly involved significant bodywork, including adding one-piece floors, frame rails, quarter panels, inner fenders, wheel wells, and reinforcements for the adjustable coilover suspension. The exterior features a striking Black Metallic finish with Grey Metallic racing stripes, accented by fresh chrome trim.
Shelby GT500 badges and decals, functional side scoops, side-exit exhausts, a ram-air hood cowl, auxiliary driving lights, and American Racing Shelby 407 wheels with knockoff-style center caps complete the look. It’s equipped with Nitto NT555 tires, sized 245/45 R17 in the front and 315/35 R17 in the rear.
Inside, the car boasts high-back black leather bucket seats in the front, along with folding rear seats. Deluxe brushed aluminum door panels and dashboard accents further enhance the interior. Features include a tilting steering wheel, Carroll Shelby Signature gauges, AutoMeter instrumentation, center and overhead consoles with map lights, an AM/FM/USB radio, GT500 Eleanor-style seatbelts, and a Hurst shifter. The odometer was reset to zero during the restoration.
Under the hood, the Mustang is powered by a fully rebuilt 429ci V8 engine, upgraded with ported heads, MSD ignition, a Holley Sniper EFI system, an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake manifold, and custom stainless-steel headers. A custom fuel tank and electric fuel pump further support the engine, producing 500 horsepower and 550 lb.-ft of torque. This power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a Tremec TK0 600 5-speed manual transmission, a Modern Driveline conversion kit, and a 3.73 limited-slip 9″ rear axle.
Performance enhancements to the chassis include power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, a shock tower delete kit, Heidts fully adjustable coil overs, QA1 shocks, frame connectors, a new wiring harness, and Wilwood disc brakes with a 7/8″ bore master cylinder.
