FOR SALE: 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR

One of 933 fastbacks built in 1968

Produced for just one year, the 1968 Shelby GT500KR, powered by the 428 Cobra Jet engine, needs no introduction as the “King of the Road.” While the original 428 CI GT500 was already powerful, the GT500KR featured the even more potent Cobra Jet 428 engine, which dominated the Super Stock class at the April 1968 NHRA Winternationals.

Although the factory rated it at 335 HP, the Cobra Jet delivered significantly more power. The GT500KR also boasted larger brakes, underhood bracing, and staggered rear shocks. The “King of the Road” name was a playful dig at Chevrolet, who was planning a Corvette with the same name.

Ordered in May 1968, this GT500KR left the Metuchen factory with Acapulco Blue paint, black vinyl luxury bucket seats, a four-speed manual transmission, a 3.50 traction-lock rear axle, shoulder harnesses, visibility group, sport deck rear seat, power steering, tilt-away steering wheel, AM radio, and interior decor group.

Its history is meticulously documented, tracing its journey from the factory floor to its current ownership. The car has undergone meticulous maintenance and restoration, preserving its authenticity while ensuring optimal performance. The included dyno results provide irrefutable evidence of the GT500KR’s prodigious power output.

Acquired by its current owner in 2020, the GT500KR now resides in France, retaining many original parts and documented history. This Shelby Mustang GT500KR presents itself as a stunning example of automotive artistry and engineering. Its combination of historical significance, exceptional performance, and meticulous care make it a truly exceptional collector’s piece.
