Let’s face it, when you think Mustang, you’re imagining a roaring V8 up front making a ton of noise and spinning up the rear wheels. It’s so ingrained into the Mustang formula that it’s a V8 up front that anything else up there just seems wrong. It’s spawned a lot of (unearned) derision because it’s not a big, gas gulping engine, and in some areas of the United States, you might get mocked for buying a Mustang that doesn’t have the biggest, most powerful engine in it.

So why, then, does the first half of the available trim levels of the 7th Generation Mustang come with a turbocharged inline four, of all things?
