In 1966, Hertz Car Rental Company sought a high-profile performance car for its fleet and approached Carroll Shelby, who agreed to supply 1,000 specially modified Shelby Mustang GT350s. These Hertz-exclusive models had additional power and were mostly finished in Hertz’s black-and-gold color scheme.
Available for $17 a day plus mileage, these GT350s quickly gained popularity. Known as “Rent-a-Racers,” they were often rented for weekend racing, returning with wear from enthusiastic drivers. Four decades later, Hertz again sought an upscale performance car and reconnected with Carroll Shelby to create another distinctive Shelby Mustang, continuing the legacy in 2006.
The 2006 GT-H models featured signature gold side and dual Le Mans racing stripes, a custom front fascia, brushed aluminum grille, side scoops, five-spoke wheels, and a Shelby-specific hood with an air extractor.
Beyond aesthetics, Ford Racing equipped the GT-H with performance enhancements. These included the FR3 Handling Package with upgraded suspension and the FR1 Power Package, boosting horsepower to 325 with a cold-air intake, high-flow mufflers, and a performance tune.
