This 1969 Ford Mustang fastback known as “The Real Thing” is a custom-built masterpiece by Bodie Stroud’s BS Industries and will be auctioned by Mecum Auctions in Glendale on March 22nd. At its heart lies an ultra-rare 494 CI Boss Can-Am aluminum V-8, one of just 10 ever built for Holman-Moody’s Can-Am racing program. This very engine powered a McLaren M6B “429er” driven by Mario Andretti.
QMP Racing meticulously rebuilt the engine, equipping it with Kaase Boss CNC cylinder heads, a Crower billet crankshaft, Manley titanium valves, and a custom camshaft from LSM Systems Engineering. The original Holman-Moody fuel injection was converted to electronic by Kinsler Fuel Injection, and a FAST ECU manages the system. The result? 777.5 HP at 7,000 RPM and 579 lb-ft of torque.
Power is sent through a Tremec T56 Magnum 6-speed manual transmission with a McLeod clutch and flywheel to a Ford 9-inch rear end. Built on a custom chassis, it features tubular front control arms, a 4-link rear suspension, RideTech Titanium series ShockWave shocks, and Brembo brakes. Custom Rushforth wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires complete the look.
Inside, it boasts 2011 Mustang gauges, Vintage Air, an Alpine touchscreen audio system, and digital RideTech controls. The car debuted at SEMA 2010 and caught the attention of Mario Andretti, who autographed the valve cover.
