An award-winning 1970 Shelby GT500

This 1970 Shelby GT500 fastback is one of 380 carryover models from 1969 that Shelby sold as 1970 models. It was initially delivered to Northwestern Motor Car Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. According to a 1989 letter from the son-in-law of the original owner, the car was used for only six months after purchase before being put into storage.

The son-in-law bought the car from his father-in-law in 1982, with just 6,921 miles on the odometer. He showcased the vehicle at the Shelby American Automobile Club Nationals in 1983 and 1986, winning his division both times. Afterward, the GT500 was loaned to the Hartford Heritage Museum in Wisconsin for three years before being sold.

Today, this GT500 has continued to earn recognition, including the SAAC Chairman’s Award in 2014 and an Indiana SAAC Award of Excellence in 2022. It is currently offered for sale on Bring A  Trailer with just 6,980 total miles on the odometer.

The car is finished in Wimbledon White with side and twin black hood stripes. Its exterior features include a fiberglass front valance, a vented hood with NACA-style inlets, a black front chin spoiler, fog lights, quarter panel vents, Shelby badging, a trunk lid spoiler, and dual square center-exit exhaust outlets. The car rides on gray 15-inch five-spoke Shelby wheels with polished lips and black center caps, paired with older F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas tires. It features power steering, with braking provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The cabin has black vinyl bucket seats and matching door panel upholstery. Amenities include a Sport Deck fold-down rear seat, woodgrain trim, a dashboard-mounted clock, a Shelby-specific center console, a roll bar, an AM radio, and a heater.

Under the hood, the car houses a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 engine equipped with a four-barrel carburetor, ram-air intake, and finned valve covers. It was factory-rated at 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Toploader close-ratio four-speed manual transmission and a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential.
