The first Shelby Mustang, the GT350, debuted in 1965 featuring a modified Ford 289ci high-performance small-block V8 engine generating 306bhp. Optional versions offered 340-360bhp for competition or 400bhp with supercharging.
Initially, it came with a 4-speed Borg-Warner manual gearbox, later joined by a heavy-duty 3-speed automatic option. Enhancements to the running gear accommodated the GT350’s power, though externally it resembled the standard Mustang except for the distinctive racing stripes.
In 1966, Carroll Shelby, known for his business acumen and racing prowess, partnered with Hertz to provide high-performance rental cars to the public. This deal allowed enthusiasts to experience the Shelby GT350 by renting it from Hertz for $17 a day and 17 cents per mile. Hertz acquired 1,000 GT350s, mostly in black and gold, for nationwide rental.
One such car, chassis SFM 6S1879, was built in April 1966 with an automatic transmission and Raven Black finish. Purchased by Hertz in Tucson, Arizona, it cost $3,859.75, including chrome wheels and a radio.
After its rental life, it entered private ownership in the Southwest and underwent a meticulous rotisserie restoration, meeting both Mustang Club of America and Shelby American Automobile Club standards.
This restored 1966 GT350-H, retaining its original features and matching engine numbers, stands as a testament to the era’s iconic performance cars and remains highly revered among Shelby collectors. This stunning GT350H is scheduled to hit the auction block at RM Sotheby’s Monterey event next month with an estimated value of $175,000 – $225,000.
