In 1967, the Mustang factory introduced a 390ci ‘big-block’ V8, but Shelby took it a step further by equipping the car with Ford’s 428ci (7.0-liter) Cobra Jet V8, resulting in the legendary Shelby Mustang GT500. Initially produced at Shelby’s facility in Los Angeles and later at A O Smith Company’s plant in Ionia, Michigan, these models incorporated styling and mechanical updates from the stock version while maintaining unique features until 1970.
The new Shelby Mustang boasted a powerful 428 cubic inch V8 engine with a 10:1 compression ratio, a high-performance Police Interceptor cam, and dual 600cfm Holley 4-barrel carbs, delivering a modestly rated 355 horsepower but exceeding that by about 50 hp, alongside 420 lb-ft of torque. It was a hit with distinctive features like scoops and a fiberglass hood, selling nearly twice as many as the ’67 GT350, with 2,048 fastback models manufactured that year.
A beautifully restored 1967 Shelby GT500 is now up for auction on Bring A Trailer. One of only 2,048 produced that year, this example was originally sold through Carey Paul Ford in Decatur, Georgia. Its first owner had it repainted black, and records suggest it has remained in the state ever since.
In 2015, the current owner acquired the car and soon embarked on a full restoration, which was completed between 2016 and 2019. The process involved stripping the body to return to its factory Lime Gold color, overhauling the 428ci V8 and four-speed Toploader transmission, reupholstering the front seats, and installing reproduction 15-inch Magstar wheels. Additional factory features include a fold-down rear seat, an AM radio, shoulder harnesses, and power-assisted steering and front disc brakes.
