With bold, updated styling and the power to match, the 1968 GT500 initially featured the 428 CI Police Interceptor V-8, with the even more powerful GT500KR (“King of the Road”) variant introduced later that year, equipped with the Cobra Jet version of the 428 as a midyear option.
Though factory-rated at 335 HP, the Cobra Jet actually delivered around 400 HP, dominating the competition at the 1968 NHRA Winternationals and making the GT500KR one of the most feared performance cars on the road. The 1968 Shelby GT500KR, with its unique, one-year-only design, remains one of the fastest and most collectible Shelby Mustangs.
The 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR you see here is one of only 1,053 “King of the Road” fastbacks produced. The car has been refinished in red over black and it features a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, along with 15″ 10-spoke wheels, woodgrain interior trim, folding rear seats, and an AM radio.
Assembled at the Metuchen, New Jersey, plant in April 1968, the car was originally delivered to Herff Motor Company in Memphis, Tennessee, and reportedly spent time overseas with a US serviceperson in the 1970s. Now offered for sale on Bring A Trailer, this 1968 Shelby GT500KR remains a pristine testament to Carroll Shelby’s enduring legacy.
