FOR SALE: 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback

The 1968 Shelby GT500 shifted the Shelby Mustang’s evolution, combining performance with a refined touch. Built at the A.O. Smith facility in Michigan, it featured unique fiberglass body panels, including a more prominent grille with integrated fog lamps, forward-placed hood scoops, and a rear end with a ducktail spoiler and sequential tail lights borrowed from the 1965 Thunderbird.

Under the hood, the GT500 replaced the Mustang’s 390 big-block with a 428 Police Interceptor engine. Enhanced with an aluminum intake manifold and a 735 CFM Holley 4-barrel carburetor, it delivered 360 horsepower.

The 1968 model year also introduced a more upscale interior, with Deluxe trim, a padded armrest on the console, integrated dual gauges, and a roll bar with retractable shoulder harnesses. Standard features included heavy-duty suspension, power steering, power front disc brakes, and an extra cooling package, emphasizing its performance pedigree.

This particular 1968 Shelby GT500, listed on Bring A Trailer, is one of just 1,020 fastbacks produced that year. Completed on January 3, 1968, it was initially sold by Al Grillo Ford in Lynn, Massachusetts. After spending several years in storage, it was acquired by its current owner in late 2024.

The car is finished in red over black vinyl and powered by a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. It retains period features like functional hood scoops, a rear spoiler, 14-inch styled steel wheels, and a Shelby roll bar. Recent work includes replacing the carburetor, spark plug wires, fuel filters, and control arm bushings, ensuring the car runs as impressively as it looks.
