Looking Back At The 1984 Mustang GT Turbo

The Mustang GT Turbo is often overlooked today, even when compared to the less powerful V8s of its time. It featured a robust turbocharged 2.3L 4-cylinder engine, fuel injection, and distinctive GT Turbo fender badges. With an engine output of 145 horsepower, it can be identified by a W-code on the door data tag, while the standard 2.3L 4-cylinder engine is designated by an A-code.

The Turbo GT offered impressive handling and could easily match the V8s on winding backroads, making it an underrated model. The fuel-injected engine also helped reduce the Mustang’s front-end weight, improving its balance. The combination of a 2.3L engine’s efficiency, electronic fuel injection’s quick response, and the turbocharger’s on-demand power made it an enjoyable and agile car.
