For decades, rumors of a four-door Mustang have circulated, dating back to the model’s first generation. In 2018, Ford reportedly showcased a four-door concept to dealers, but the project never moved forward. By 2020, speculation suggested a sedan was still under consideration. In May 2024, CEO Jim Farley stated that Ford could build a four-door Mustang as long as it retained its signature performance and attitude. Ford even built a full-scale prototype of a four-door Mustang based on the S197 platform around 2005, but it never reached production.
Recently, Ford filed a trademark for the name “Mach 4” with the USPTO, hinting at a new Mustang variant, possibly a sedan according to a report first published by Ford Authority. The application, filed on February 25, 2025, under serial number 99055118, covers gasoline and electric vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs. While no specific model has been announced, the name “Mach 4” aligns with Ford’s existing Mach 1 and Mach-E branding.
Industry trends suggest this could be part of Ford’s strategy to expand the Mustang subbrand, similar to how GMC, Jeep, and Chevrolet have repositioned their iconic models. However, the possibility remains that Mach 4 could refer to another performance variant or even a standalone project, like the rumored Raptor supercar.
Given Ford’s history and past reactions from Mustang purists—many of whom criticized the Mach-E—the outcome is uncertain. The Mach 4 trademark could signal a major shift for the Mustang lineup, or it might never materialize at all.
