The 2012 Shelby GT500 introduced several key updates, starting with three driver-selectable steering modes. “Comfort” offers lighter effort and less road feel, “Sport” delivers maximum steering feel with increased effort, and “Normal” balances the two. Additionally, the 2012 model featured an interior upgrade kit with Boss 302-specification Recaro bucket seats and GT500-specific leather upholstery.

Significant advancements were made under the hood. Prior to 2011, the 5.4L engine was a durable yet heavy cast iron unit, often referred to as a modified truck engine. This engine’s weight and heat retention led to power loss under hard use.

Addressing these issues, engineers developed a new 5.4L engine with an aluminum block, 6-bolt billet main bearing caps, and plasma-transferred wire arc liner coatings, enhancing durability and strength. A Roots-style supercharger and a larger two-row intercooler, offering 40% more cooling, were added. The result was an engine that gained 10 horsepower and lost 102 pounds.

The 2012 GT500 also featured increased front and rear spring rates, a lowered ride height, stiffer shocks, and the replacement of hydraulic power steering with electric power steering, improving handling and steering responsiveness. Collectively, these updates made the 2012 GT500 an exceptional evolution of the Shelby brand.
