In 2008, Ford Racing launched a modern drag-race Cobra Jet program to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the original 428 Cobra Jet Mustangs, which triumphed in the Super Stock class at the 1968 NHRA Winternationals.
The program’s popularity led to its continuation in subsequent years. For 2013, the Cobra Jet reappeared, featuring the latest drag racing technology for enhanced speed and consistency in NHRA Stock and Super Stock racing.
The 2013 Cobra Jet was offered with two 5.0-liter ‘Coyote’ V-8 engine options. Buyers could choose between the naturally aspirated version with CNC-ported heads, high-lift cams, and low-drag accessory drive, or the supercharged variant equipped with a Ford Racing and Whipple supercharger and CNC-port-matched manifold and heads.
Additionally, the 2013 CJ body was lightened for better weight distribution and featured electric power steering. Other upgrades included a roll cage with enhanced safety features, improved brake pedal feel, and refined suspension geometry for optimal 60-foot times.
The starting price for the 2013 Cobra Jet Mustang was $85,490 for the naturally aspirated model and $92,990 for the supercharged version. All 2013 CJs were NHRA tech-ready for Stock or Super Stock competition, with only 50 units produced.
