Race-Ready Shelby GT350 at Bonhams Scottsdale Auction

The 1964 debut of the Ford Mustang at the World’s Fair marked a turning point in American motoring. Recognizing the potential of their new pony car, Ford enlisted Texan racing legend Carroll Shelby to elevate the Mustang to a race-winning machine. The result was the iconic Shelby GT350.

Shelby’s enhancements pushed the Mustang’s performance to new heights. The K-Code 289ci V8 engine was tuned to produce 306 horsepower, while weight reduction and refined chassis dynamics improved handling. Upgraded brakes and suspension ensured the car’s track prowess, complemented by a race-inspired design that underscored its capability.

The GT350’s success was immediate, clinching the SCCA’s B-Production title three years in a row during the mid-1960s. Shelby also brought his vision to the streets, producing modified Mustangs sold through select Ford dealerships.

At the Scottsdale Auction on January 25, 2025, Bonhams will auction a 1966 Shelby GT350, chassis SFM 6S1226, estimated at US$140,000 – US$170,000. According to the Shelby Registry, this car was shipped in March 1966 from Shelby American to High Performance Motors in El Segundo, California.

Originally finished in Guardsman Blue with white Le Mans stripes, it featured a radio, Detroit Locker rear axle, and roll bar, totaling $4,007.20. Its first owner, Mr. Green of Atlas Auto Leasing in Beverly Hills, noted a minor warranty repair in June 1966 at 4,593 miles.

The car later passed through notable owners, including Shelby expert Craig Conley and Arthur Miller, who acquired it in 1998. Under Miller’s ownership, it was converted to GT350 R-Model specifications for vintage racing, featuring a roll cage, fiberglass front apron, brake-cooling side scoops, grey Torq-Thrust wheels, and a lightweight Plexiglas rear screen.

Maintained by ArrowLane Racing, the GT350 is described as a well-handling, race-ready car. With a freshly built engine and recent service, it remains eligible for historic racing events worldwide. This represents a rare chance to own a meticulously prepared Shelby GT350 with proven vintage racing credentials.
