Rare 1968 Shelby GT500KR Up for Auction

One of only 993 fastbacks made

The 1968 Shelby GT500KR, powered by the 428 Cobra Jet engine, earned its reputation as the “King of the Road.” Though the standard GT500 was powerful, Shelby enhanced it with the hotter 428 Cobra Jet engine, which dominated the Super Stock class at the 1968 NHRA Winternationals.

While officially rated at 335 horsepower, the engine actually produced much more power. The GT500KR also featured upgraded brakes, underhood bracing, and staggered rear shocks for improved performance. Since its release, the GT500KR has become one of the most sought-after and collectible Shelby Mustangs.

This particular GT500KR was produced on July 23, 1968, at the Metuchen Factory. Originally painted Lime Gold, it was equipped with Black Knit Vinyl bucket seats and a wide range of optional features, including a four-speed manual transmission, power disc brakes, and a 3.50 traction-lock rear axle.

The car was sold in November 1968 to Larry D. Raney of Malta, Ohio. Over the next few years, the car received several warranty repairs, including distributor and fiberglass part replacements, as well as a new crankshaft oil seal and indicators.

The car changed hands over the years, resurfacing in 2016 with 69,060 miles. In 2020, it was purchased by its current owner and brought to France, where it underwent a partial restoration by Classic Restored Cars. Now in top condition, the car will be sold with its Deluxe Marti Report®, a copy of its US title, and other key documentation.

This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 KR is expected to go on sale at Bonhams Cars on October 4 and is valued at $160,000 – US$200,000.
